The Dallas Cowboys invested a little bit more money into one of their young wide receivers on Thursday night, but it may not be the player you are thinking of. While wide receiver George Pickens is due for a contract extension as he is set to play on the franchise tag this season, it was third-year wide receiver Ryan Flournoy who got a new deal. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Cowboys signed Flournoy to a one-year contract extension worth up to $6 million.
Flournoy, 26, is coming off a productive season in which he recorded a career-high 40 catches for 475 yards and four touchdowns. There is also a strong belief that he will have an even bigger role this season since clearly establishing himself as the Cowboys' No. 3 wide receiver behind CeeDee Lamb and Pickens. If that turns out to be true, the deal could age very well a year from now and the Cowboys could be getting a steal in Flournoy for the 2027 season.
Flournoy began his professional career as a sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He made 11 appearances as a rookie, recording 10 receptions for 102 yards but no touchdowns. He was then waived by the Cowboys ahead of the 2025 season and re-signed to the practice squad.
However, he was eventually promoted to the active roster and it's safe to say he made his second chance count. In a Week 14 matchup against the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football, Flournoy had career highs in targets (12), receptions (9) and yards (115). Flournoy played college football at Central Missouri (2018-20), Iowa Western CC (2021) and Southeast Missouri State, where he racked up 118 catches for 1,823 yards and 13 touchdowns from 2022-23.
