Last season, the UConn Huskies men's basketball team reached the National Championship Game for the third time in the past four seasons under head coach Dan Hurley. They featured a talented starting five that included veteran star Alex Karaban and big man Tarris Reed Jr., both of whom have since joined the NBA, as they were no longer eligible to play. UConn also had a highly touted freshman, Braylon Mullins, whose incredible game-winning 3-pointer against Duke in the Elite Eight helped the Huskies achieve an improbable late comeback win.
While Mullins could've tried his luck in the NBA Draft, he chose to return to play at least one more season under Hurley with UConn, and this season, some have mentioned him as part of arguably college basketball's best backcourt. However, with UConn beginning its preseason exhibition games next month, some fans may have been alarmed to learn that Mullins is already dealing with an injury. Hurley addressed concerns about the situation during recent remarks to the media.

When asked specifics about Mullins' injury, Hurley remained tight-lipped, instead calling sending a message to everyone who might be concerned. "Just an undisclosed, no big deal.
Everybody calm down," Hurley recently told reporters, also mentioning that Mullins has "looked great" so far in team practices after his "mini-break." UConn's head coach reiterated that Mullins was only dealing with "something minor" right now, so nobody should worry too much about his status. WTNH-TV's John Pierson shared a video clip of Hurley's remarks on social media. Hurley's good news was that UConn's star sophomore guard will return in time to potentially play in an exhibition game against Syracuse at Connecticut's Mohegan Sun.
That game is Tuesday, Oct. 13, beginning at a time to be determined. Mullins will likely have a much bigger role this season compared to last, and based on Hurley's remarks, he's getting better. That's great news, as he'll join returning teammate Silas Demary Jr. to create a formidable UConn backcourt this season.
Both UConn guards seem like they should be potential contenders to win awards in the Big East, and possibly in all of college basketball, in this coming season. UConn will have two more October exhibition games, against Michigan State in Michigan and Purdue in Connecticut, before preparing for their regular season. That begins Nov. 2, when they host Gardner-Webb, also at a time to be determined.
