About a month ago we learned that David Byrne composer Daniel Pemberton had written a song using only Elon Musk quotes for the soundtrack to Musk, the new Musk documentary from director Alex Gibney, whose previous subjects include Scientology (Going Clear), Elizabeth Holmes (The Inventor), and Enron (The Smartest Guys In The Room). That song is out today, a day ahead of the film's theatrical debut. In attempting to promote Musk, Bleecker Street, the film's distributor, ran into a surprising, somewhat disconcerting problem: All of the major social media platforms refused to run the trailer as a paid advertising, flagging it as "political" content.
You'd expect Musk's own X to reject the trailer, but YouTube, TikTok, and Meta all turned it down too, which seems like an instance of oligarchs trying to protect one of their own. Well, David Byrne's going to do what he can to get the word out. "Let Me Sell You A Dream" is an uptempo pop-rock song with a real groovy bass line, some playful retro rock 'n' roll organ, and lyrics that indeed comprise Musk quotations.
"I'm extremely hardcore/ You know my manners are strong," he begins. "And I would not even eat/ If I could get my work done." Hear the song below. Musk is 235 minutes long and is reportedly "scathing." It hits theaters this Friday.
