DC Studios has multiple Batman and Batman-adjacent projects in the works, like its The Brave and the Bold movie and a Poison Ivy TV series. On the docket for 2028 is Dynamic Duo, an ambitious animated film about two Robins: Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. It will use a combination of miniatures, puppetry, animatronics, and CGI to bring its heroes to life.
Co-CEO Peter Safran confirmed who will be starring as one of those Robins. Speaking with Collider, he said How to Train Your Dragon star Mason Thames will play Dick Grayson, DC's first Boy Wonder who later became the hero Nightwing. "Mason always wanted to be Dick Grayson," Safran said.
"He came in, and auditioned the shit out of it, and was awesome." Safran's official confirmation comes after Hollywood insiders reported in September that Thames would play Grayson. Other reported cast members are Logan Kim as Jason Todd, Marsai Martin as Barbara Gordon, Lee Pace as Red Hood 1, and Steve Buscemi as Red Hood 2. Dynamic Duo is being directed by Arthur Mintz and will be released on Sept. 22, 2028.
Comic book continuity is a lot to keep up with, and DC Studios' upcoming slate is no different. Recent projects like Superman and Clayface will be part of the DC Universe (DCU), as will The Brave and the Bold. But Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson's The Batman movies take place in a separate continuity, and are considered Elseworlds stories.
Safran's fellow DC Studios head James Gunn has previously confirmed Dynamic Duo will not be part of the DCU. That means it will likely be classified as an Elseworlds story too and take place in its own separate continuity. Dick Grayson is the best-known Robin of the Bat Family.
He has previously been portrayed by Chris O'Donnell in Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, Brenton Thwaites in Titans, Scott Menville in Teen Titans, and Burt Ward in the 1966 Batman television series.
