Last month, Deafheaven guitarist Kerry McCoy mentioned mysterious plans for a new EP. Talking to the Spanish website Binaural, McCoy said the new record would be both "the heaviest" and "the hardest" thing that the band had ever done — a big claim when this band is the one under discussion. He also said that it would be out "before the end of the year." Right now, Deafheaven are on tour with fellow heavy music titans Mastodon and Alcest, and we've been seeing reports about the band selling that new EP at the merch tables.
Deafheaven's new EP it's called At Work In The Fields Of The Bomb. Kerry McCoy was telling the truth about the record arriving before the end of 2026. It's a little early to say how it stacks up against the rest of the band's catalog in terms of both heaviness and hardness, but it is definitely both hard and heavy.
On this one, the band follows the ferocious path of last year's spectacular Lonely People With Power. This time, they've got a very specific reason in mind. At Work In The Fields Of The Bomb is named after a photo book from Robert Del Tredici, which depicts the regular people involved in manufacturing nuclear weapons, one of those things that drives home the banality of evil in stark and tangible ways.
The EP has three tracks in 23 minutes, and it ends with the absolutely overwhelming 13-minute epic "Sorry Laid The Hearth," which just seems to pick up intensity as it keeps going. I'm on my first listen right now, and this motherfucker will pulverize you. It's not out until later this morning, but there's a video, too.
Nico Poalillo directed the clip for opening track "Hunter," and it's shot by Janusz Kamiński, the legendary Polish cinematographer who has been Steven Spielberg's guy for decades and who won Oscars for Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan.
