Detroit Lions safety Avonte Maddox sustained a foot injury during the team's "Thursday Night Football" loss to the Buffalo Bills last week. The veteran defensive back was carted off the field, unable to return to the contest and spotted on crutches after the game. When speaking to reporters on Monday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell shared an unfortunate update on Maddox's injury status.
Maddox will miss the remainder of the 2026 NFL season as he undergoes surgery to repair the injury. "He's going to require surgery. Looks like he'll be out for the season," Campbell said.
"That hurts a little bit. Maddox is a good player for us. Good solid football player.
But that's the hand we're dealt and we move forward." Maddox started both of the Lions' first two games to open up the season. Detroit is devastated by injuries at the safety position, with both Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch on the physically unable to perform list to begin the year. The Lions are 1-1 to start the year, narrowly beating the New Orleans Saints in Week 1 before Thursday's loss to the Bills.
Detroit will face off against the New York Jets this coming Sunday.
