Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has accused Democrats of using rhetoric to unfairly demonize Immigration and Customs Enforcement and undermine President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda. Speaking at a press conference in New York on Tuesday to announce the results of “Operation Rotten Apple” — a month-long statewide sweep targeting non-citizens with criminal records — Mullin argued that public backlash against federal immigration authorities was being driven primarily by political opponents rather than the agency’s actions. Renée Good, 37, was shot and killed inside her vehicle by an ICE agent on January 7, while Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, was shot multiple times and killed weeks later on January 24 by Customs and Border Protection officers deployed alongside immigration enforcement teams. Separately, opponents have voiced concern over the conditions within federal detention facilities, pointing to reports of overcrowding, inadequate medical care and restricted access to legal representation for detainees. During his confirmation proceedings earlier this year, Mullin faced intense questioning from Senate Democrats over previous statements defending controversial ICE operations, as well as proposals that critics argue infringe on local authority in sanctuary cities.
Despite the growing pushback from advocacy groups, DHS leadership has maintained a hardline stance. Mullin’s comments reflect the administration’s ongoing defense of ICE, casting public criticism of the agency as a calculated political tactic by Democrats rather than a response to its enforcement practices. Critics pushed back on the secretary’s comments.
