The agent for Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte issued an update about her client's status on Aug. 19. While the update at least resolved the conflicting reports 24 hours earlier about whether or not his knee injury warranted an MRI, Marte's on- and off-the-field issues remain far from resolved. Charisse Espinosa-Dash, Marte’s agent, told Jon Morosi of MLB Network that Marte is “currently managing a personal matter and will be undergoing an MRI on his knee tomorrow (Thursday, Aug. 20).” “Ketel appreciates the unwavering support from fans, teammates, the Diamondbacks organization, and Torey Lovullo during this time,” she said.
Players on the restricted list are unpaid under MLB rules. The next day, conflicting reports placed Marte both in Boston, where the Diamondbacks are playing the Red Sox, and in Phoenix to get an MRI on his knee. If Marte is hurt, the Diamondbacks can simply place him on the injured list and allow Marte to accrue pay while he rehabilitates. While the nature of his "personal matter" off the field is unclear, it has apparently taken precedence over the injury. If Marte's agent felt like her client deserved to be placed on the IL, as opposed to the restricted list (effectively an unpaid suspension), she could have made that clear in her statements to the media.
