Arizona Diamondbacks president Derrick Hall appeared on a Phoenix radio station Thursday, Aug. 20 to tell the public what he knows about the mysterious situation surrounding All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte. In his interview with KMVP (98.7-FM), Hall made it abundantly clear he doesn't know much. "We’re all sort of sparing judgment because we don’t know yet what the explanation is.” The latest drama surrounding Marte began when he failed to show up at Fenway Park on Monday, Aug. 17 for the Diamondbacks' game against the Boston Red Sox.
He was placed on the restricted list minutes before the game's first pitch. Players on the restricted list are unpaid under MLB rules. The next day, conflicting reports placed Marte both in Boston and in Phoenix to get an MRI on his knee.

Instead, Charisse Espinosa-Dash told Jon Morosi of MLB Network that Marte is “currently managing a personal matter and will be undergoing an MRI on his knee (Thursday).” “Ketel appreciates the unwavering support from fans, teammates, the Diamondbacks organization, and Torey Lovullo during this time,” she said. Marte spent two days on the restricted list in July 2025 when he left the team to tend to a personal matter.
