A U.K. mom was told her unborn son was healthy, but she couldn't ignore a feeling that something had changed. Ellie O’Reilly was 18 years old and 38 weeks pregnant when she began experiencing reduced fetal movements. "My biggest concern was that his movements had completely slowed down, felt less prominent, and the pattern had changed entirely," O’Reilly told Newsweek.
"Every midwife tells you that if your baby’s usual pattern slows or differs, this is likely a sign that something could be wrong. So, for me, this was the biggest warning sign." Although tests and monitoring appeared normal, O'Reilly, who was expecting her first child with fiance George, couldn't stop worrying about what might happen after she left the hospital. "If his movements had changed to the point where I didn’t know what was normal for him, how would I know if he became unwell or if he was already becoming unwell?" Ellie said.
"This is what consumed me." After several days of monitoring and an ultrasound that reportedly showed a healthy baby, the first-time mom continued to push for answers. Eventually, she spoke with a doctor who agreed to induce labor after listening to her concerns. Far from feeling anxious about the induction itself, Ellie felt relieved that her son would soon be delivered, "instead of being full of dread and anxiety that something was wrong," she said.
Shortly after the induction process began, however, the situation changed dramatically. Both Ellie and George had become familiar with the fetal monitoring equipment after several days in hospital. As they watched the screen, the baby's heart rate began to fall, dropping from 147 to 48 beats per minute within moments.
The monitor started sounding alarms and medical staff rushed into the room and an emergency bell was triggered. "I started crying the second I looked George, because he looked so worried and he is genuinely the calmest person I’ve ever met," Ellie said. "I was absolutely petrified being rushed to theater." Surrounded by medical professionals as she was taken for an emergency C-section, Ellie felt "helpless, terrified and gutted." Thankfully, their son Rome was delivered safely and soon after, a midwife offered to show her the placenta.
Initially reluctant, Ellie eventually learned what had happened. The placenta had become heavily clotted, affecting her baby's oxygen supply. Placental clotting (placental thrombosis) is a medical complication in which blood clots can impair circulation through the placenta, potentially reducing the oxygen and nutrients reaching the fetus.
