Dolphins Claim Recently Released Rookie RB

The Miami Dolphins had added a promising rookie to their running back room.

The Washington Commanders made the very surprising decision to waive running back Kaytron Allen on Thursday, but the rookie has already found a new home in the NFL. According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Miami Dolphins have claimed Allen off waivers on Friday. Allen, 23, was selected in the fifth-round of the 2026 NFL Draft, out of Penn State, where he became the Nittany Lions' all-time leader in rushing yards with 4,180.

He looked to be in a great position in Washington, which had a ton of questions at running back, but he was never able to establish a role for himself. Through the first four games of the 2026 season, Allen only received 12 carries, which he took for 41 yards and zero touchdowns. The Dolphins' interest in Allen makes a ton of sense, though.

Since losing star running back De’Von Achane to a torn ACL, Miami has been trying to find an answer at the position. Second-year running back Ollie Gordon II impressed last week with 100 rushing yards and a touchdown, but the question remains of whether or not he can continue that kind of production the rest of the season. If not, Allen may just get the shot he was hoping to receive in Washington and force the Commanders to regret ever moving on from him.
