The Miami Dolphins offense has struggled through the first two weeks of the NFL season, falling 27-13 to the Raiders in Week 1 and then losing 35-13 to the 49ers in Week 2. De'Von Achane hasn't gotten anything going on the ground, with just 110 rushing yards on 31 carries (3.1 yards per carry) through two weeks, while Malik Willis has had an up-and-down start as the Dolphins quarterback. But one bright spot has been rookie wideout Caleb Douglas, who leads all Dolphins receivers with 113 receiving yards on seven catches (10 targets).
Unfortunately, Miami will need to manage its Week 3 showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs without him, as head coach Jeff Hafley told reporters Friday that Douglas will miss Sunday's game with an ankle injury. Douglas suffered the injury during the fourth quarter of the Dolphins' Week 2 loss to the 49ers and has missed practice all week. He ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash and posted a 31.5-inch vertical leap at the NFL Combine, which, coupled with his 6-foot-4, 205-pound frame, made him an intriguing prospect coming into the draft. The Dolphins felt confident enough to make him a third-round pick (No. 75 overall), making him their first receiver taken off the board despite a fifth-round pre-draft projection. So far, he's lived up to the hype, quickly emerging as the Dolphins' top wideout and a legitimate deep threat.
The Chiefs are undefeated and have one of the better defenses in the NFL, allowing the third-fewest yards (252.2 per game) through two weeks. Without Douglas, there will be more pressure on Malik Washington, Ryan Miller, and rookie Chris Bell to step up, though both Miller and Bell are currently dealing with injuries of their own.
