Dolphins Rookie Linebacker to Undergo Surgery, Miss Extended Time

The Dolphins added 13 draft picks this season, more than any other team, but now they've lost a strong player to injury.

The Miami Dolphins are ushering in a new era under head coach Jeff Hafley. With Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, and Jaylen Waddle all gone, along with several key figures on defense, the Dolphins loaded up in the draft with 13 total picks — the most of any team in the NFL, a clear sign they're going younger and adding fresh pieces on both sides of the ball. While second-round pick Jacob Rodriguez, Texas Tech's All-Big 12 linebacker, has generated the most attention, fourth-rounder Trey Moore built significant buzz throughout camp and was making a strong case to start for the Dolphins in 2026.

Unfortunately, he'll now be out for an extended period as he recovers from surgery on his injured left ankle. Moore suffered the injury just two plays into the Dolphins' 26-3 loss to the Giants on Saturday, and was carted to the locker room afterward. "Hopefully he will be back at some point this season, but it will be a while," Hafley said.

He recorded 70 total tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, four pass breakups, three fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles across 28 games with the Longhorns between 2024 and 2025. Prior to that, he starred at UTSA, earning first-team All-AAC and AAC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2023 after racking up 45 combined tackles along with 17.5 tackles for loss and 14 sacks in just 12 games — both of which led the conference.

Throughout the summer, Moore had been making his case to earn the starting linebacker job alongside Jordyn Brooks in Miami. Now, it's looking like he might not make his NFL debut until well into his rookie season. More news: Browns Coach Reveals Shedeur Sanders’ Reaction to Losing Starting Job
