Drake Maye and the New England Patriots have had extra time to consider their Week 1 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. New England squandered a 10-0 lead and fell 13-10 after Maye tossed three late interceptions in the Super Bowl rematch. An unusual Wednesday-night opener gives the Patriots a longer wait to seek redemption in Sunday's Week 2 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
While the Patriots have extra time to recover and adjust, Maye noted the downside of the early schedule after a difficult loss. You have a lot of time to think about it," Maye told reporters on Wednesday, per ESPN's Mike Reiss. "I think that definitely over the weekend, you’re watching it and thinking about it.
Usually, I have kind of the 24 hours – you think about it on Sunday night, for sure, and then Monday you watch it and kind of get rid of it. This time it was Thursday, and Friday, and Saturday, and we got in there on Sunday. It just felt longer." The 24-year-old stressed the importance of rapidly bouncing back from a disappointing outcome.
"You realize it’s Week 1, but at the same time, you have to fix these things quick and in a hurry," Maye said. "Because these things are not going to win you football games. It’s the stuff that gets you beat." Last Wednesday night was a sobering setback for Maye, who hadn't thrown multiple interceptions in a single game during the 2025 regular season.
The MVP runner-up also averaged fewer yards per pass attempt (5.4) than in any of last season's 17 games. However, Maye and Co. don't have to press the panic button just yet. They also lost last season's Week 1 contest before finishing 14-3 and winning an AFC title behind head coach Mike Vrabel.
The Patriots play their home opener against the Steelers this Sunday at 1 p.m.
