Behind a second-half comeback, Oregon rallied to defeat No. 20 Northwestern 34-26 at Autzen Stadium, delivering a much-needed victory after a challenging stretch for head coach Dan Lanning's program. The Ducks entered the matchup having lost three of their previous four games, including a 21-10 defeat against Illinois the week before. Things appeared headed in the wrong direction again Saturday.
Northwestern jumped out to an early lead behind quarterback Aidan Chiles, who connected with Griffin Wilde for a 64-yard touchdown in the first quarter. The Wildcats continued building momentum, eventually taking a 20-6 lead before Oregon responded with a touchdown pass from Raiola to Dakorien Moore late in the second quarter. The Ducks trailed 20-13 at halftime, leaving plenty of work to do against a Northwestern team that entered the contest with a 6-1 record.
However, Oregon found its rhythm after halftime. Raiola connected with tight end Jamari Johnson for a touchdown that helped bring the Ducks within striking distance. Running back Brandon Smith then delivered one of the game's biggest plays, scoring on fourth down in the final quarter to give Oregon its first lead.
Raiola found Moore for another touchdown, extending Oregon's advantage and putting Northwestern in a difficult position. The Wildcats attempted to mount a comeback, but Oregon's defense came through with several critical stops, including a blocked field goal attempt. The victory was particularly significant given the changes surrounding Oregon's offense.
Earlier in the week, Lanning dismissed offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer and elevated assistant quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson to take over play-calling duties. The Ducks were also playing without starting quarterback Dante Moore, whose season is not expected to resume because of a concussion suffered in September. That left Raiola responsible for guiding an offense attempting to regain its confidence.
Saturday's comeback provided an encouraging response. Oregon improved to 5-3 overall, while Northwestern fell to 6-2. Saturday's victory was more than just another win for Oregon.
