Eagles' $100 Million Man in Doubt for Week 1

Eagles DC Vic Fangio admitted he's worried that Philadelphia's new $100 million man could miss the start of the regular season.

The Philadelphia Eagles boast one of the best defenses in the NFL under longtime defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, whose system helped lead the franchise to a Super Bowl in 2025. But the Eagles added even more star power this offseason, trading for Minnesota Vikings star edge rusher Jonathan Greenard in April. Greenard immediately signed a four-year, $100 million extension to remain in Philadelphia through the 2029 season, including $50 million guaranteed.

Unfortunately, Greenard was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list ahead of training camp after suffering a pectoral strain during a weightlifting session, and he hasn't practiced with the team since. Now Fangio believes the injury could linger into the regular season. "Yeah," Fangio told reporters Wednesday when asked if he's worried Greenard could miss the start of the regular season.

"I don't know when Greenard will be back," Fangio said. "You know, that injury he got in our weight room is going to take some time to heal." Kicking off the season against a tough NFC East opponent without one of your best players is the last thing Philly wants.

What's worse, though, is that if Greenard remains on the PUP list past the final roster deadline on Aug. 30, he'll have to move to the Reserve/PUP list, which would force him to sit out at least the first four games of the season. Greenard has been one of the league's top pass rushers over the past few seasons. Since 2023 — including one season with the Houston Texans and two with the Vikings — he's racked up 27.5 sacks, putting him just a few spots behind elite players like Will Anderson Jr. (30), Maxx Crosby (32), and Aidan Hutchinson (33.5).

He earned his first Pro Bowl nod in 2024 after posting 59 combined tackles, 12 sacks, and four forced fumbles, and he was expected to bring that same disruptiveness to Philadelphia. Now, it's starting to look like Eagles fans might not see him in action until October, if not later. More news: 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan Reveals Real Reason Behind Christian McCaffrey’s Absence
