Eagles Make Move at RB Amid Saquon Barkley Injury Concerns

The Eagles are adding a former Texans running back with Saquon Barkley questionable for Week 5 and Tank Bigsby on injured reserve.

The Philadelphia Eagles offense has looked horrendous through the first four weeks of the NFL season. Much of the blame has gone to Jalen Hurts and offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, and justifiably so, after Hurts threw for just 93 yards in the Eagles' Week 4 loss to the Rams. But the run game, long Philly's identity, still hasn't gotten going, and the team is now dealing with injuries to both Saquon Barkley and primary backup Tank Bigsby.

Bigsby has already been placed on injured reserve with a core muscle injury, while Barkley is listed as questionable for Week 5 against the Jaguars with a hamstring injury. With only third-year back Will Shipley remaining on the depth chart, the Eagles have decided to add another piece to the rotation, elevating Dameon Pierce to the 53-man roster on Wednesday. More news: Cardinals Urged to Turn to Rookie QB Carson Beck After Giants Loss Pierce was the Texans' fourth-round pick in 2022 out of Florida, and he exploded as a rookie, taking over as the lead back and rushing for 939 yards and four touchdowns on 220 carries, averaging 4.3 yards per carry.

Unfortunately, his time in Houston fizzled out over the next few years. He lost the starting job to Devin Singletary before taking a backseat to Joe Mixon and then Woody Marks and Nick Chubb last season. The Texans waived him in November 2025, and he signed with the Chiefs' practice squad a few days later but appeared in just one game late in the season.

He appeared in one preseason game against the Bengals, rushing for 44 yards on four carries. His efficiency has declined significantly since his rookie breakout, and he has dealt with injuries as well, but Pierce provides a nice change-of-pace option next to Shipley, who does most of his damage in the receiving game.
