For the past decade or so, shortstop has been regarded as the top position in Fantasy Baseball, featuring such bankable stars as Francisco Lindor, Trea Turner and Corey Seager. But how bankable are they now? All three took a significant step backward in 2026, and they weren't alone in that regard.
Along with the disappointing stat lines from Mookie Betts, Dansby Swanson and Willy Adames, the position is really beginning to show its age. Sure, Konnor Griffin is on the way up, but he may be needed just to replace Gunnar Henderson. His upward trajectory has been stunted the past couple of years, raising the question of whether he deserves to be an early-round pick at all.
I'm not saying shortstop is as thin as second base or even third base, but it isn't so far off from the latter, actually. I wouldn't call it the top position anymore after what I've already documented at first base. Note that the focus here is standard 5x5 scoring (such as Rotisserie leagues), but scroll a little further, and you'll see my rankings for points leagues as well. 1.
