This time just over a decade ago, Ed Miliband was known for pushing his older brother David out of the way to become leader of the Labour party … only to lose the 2015 general election and become an internet meme for eating a bacon sandwich. But through the last 10 years, Miliband seems to have undergone a quiet transformation. This week he condemned Israel’s “settler terrorists”, saying they were ethnically cleansing the West Bank, his condemnation breaking decades-long government policy on UK-Israel relations.
And, his supporters say, he’s only just getting started. Heather Stewart, the Guardian’s economics editor, tells Nosheen Iqbal about Miliband’s journey from awkward, policy geek with big ideas to serious strategist who not only knows how to get things done but is driven by strong principles.
