Eli Drinkwitz Addresses Florida State Rumors After Mike Norvell Firing

Eli Drinkwitz made it clear how he feels about Missouri as Florida State rumors heat up following Mike Norvell's firing.

Florida State decided the cost of keeping Mike Norvell had become greater than the cost of moving on. The Seminoles fired him on Sunday, one day after their 36-24 loss at home against Clemson, dropping them to 3-5 on the year. Norvell finished his seven seasons in Tallahassee with a 41-39 overall record, and never got back to the high from 2023, when he led FSU to a perfect 13-0 season and an ACC title.

Reports indicate his buyout is around $50.3 million, one of the highest in college football history. Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz, who had been floated as a possible replacement, wasted little time addressing the rumors on Tuesday, making his position clear before reporters had a chance to ask any questions. "I'm not a candidate at Florida State," Drinkwitz said.

"I want to clear that up. Let's focus on the main thing, which is Texas. And let's eliminate all of the distractions, and clear the clutter from that standpoint for my team and for everybody out there." After going 12-1 at Appalachian State in 2019, winning the Sun Belt, he took over for the Tigers in 2020 and has since gone 52-31 as the head coach. He led Missouri to an 11-2 season in 2023, which earned him SEC Coach of the Year honors, and won the Cotton Bowl that season over Ohio State. The Tigers then went 10-3 in 2024 before dipping down to 8-5 last season, but now they're back in the College Football Playoff hunt, sitting at 6-2 overall and 3-2 in SEC play heading into Sunday's high-profile showdown against No. 10 Texas.

His sustained success has kept Drinkwitz on the radar for other major jobs the last few seasons, including LSU, Florida, and Penn State during the 2025 coaching carousel. But he responded by reiterating his commitment to Missouri and signing a new contract through 2031, worth an average of around $10.75 million annually. He's repeatedly said his family is happy in Columbia and is committed to building a championship program at Missouri.

They can still make the CFP, but would likely need to win at least three of their last four games, starting with the Longhorns on Saturday. After that matchup, they'll travel to No. 2 Georgia, host No. 8 Kentucky, and close out the season back at home against Oklahoma.
