The Carolina Panthers are still reeling from their brutal 21-18 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. After beating the brakes off their rival Atlanta Falcons in Week 2 with a 34-3 road win, Carolina was outplayed on both sides of the ball by a team many expected to be 0-3 at this point. Now the Panthers are below .500 at 1-2, tied with the Falcons and New Orleans Saints.
As if Sunday's loss wasn't already bad enough, Carolina has now lost one of its best players, potentially for the season. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that star cornerback Jaycee Horn suffered a torn quad against the Browns and is now "out indefinitely," with the Panthers placing him on Injured Reserve. So far, he's lived up to that billing, developing into one of the league's premier shutdown corners. Horn has earned back-to-back Pro Bowl selections over the past two seasons and is coming off the best season of his career. He recorded a career-high five interceptions, along with 37 combined tackles, including 26 solo tackles, one tackle for loss, and eight pass breakups.
The Panthers rewarded him with a four-year, $100 million extension in March 2025, making him one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the NFL. At $25 million per year, he still trails only Christian Gonzalez, Devon Witherspoon, Denzel Ward, Trent McDuffie, Sauce Gardner, and Derek Stingley Jr. among the league's highest-paid corners. Now, one of the most important players on Carolina's defense and the emotional backbone of the unit could be lost for the rest of the season.

The team already lost ascending edge rusher Nic Scourton to a torn ACL during training camp, while All-Pro linebacker Devin Lloyd missed Week 3 with a calf injury. Several offensive players have also gone down, including third-round rookie Chris Brazzell II, former first-round pick Ikem Ekwonu, and veteran tackle Taylor Moton.
The Panthers have a brutal stretch ahead, with matchups against the Lions, Eagles, Buccaneers and Packers coming up. Now they'll have to navigate that stretch without one of the most important pieces of their defense.
