At the end of this month, Elena Tonra who leads the indie-folk trio Daughter, is dropping a new album under another project Ex:Re, titled Save As. She's already released the lead track "Radio Station," and earlier this week, she shared the follow-up single "Sleep." "Sleep" came about initially as a demo, recorded in a Paris hotel room. It's built from a loop of an acoustic guitar, which was run through a vocoder and a drum machine.
It gives the song a spooky, free-floating feeling. Tonra's voice is as clear as mineral water, but the production creates a ripple of shadows around her. In a press release, Tonra revealed that the single has a “late night, after hours" feeling to it, making it “something that I’d dance to!" Considering the song is titled "Sleep" with the lyric "guess there's nothing left to do but sleep," that's sort of funny.
But "Sleep" has a restlessness to it. Maybe that's not all there is to do. The closing lyric is perfect: "I fall apart in taxis/ I free myself on dance floors." Save As is out 10/30 on 4AD.
