The story of the Pittsburgh Steelers offseason has been the backup quarterback battle between rookie third-round pick Drew Allar and 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard. Both players have received a fair amount of playing time during Pittsburgh’s first two preseason games, but former Steelers linebacker Arthur Moats, who 87 tackles, 11.5 sacks, five passes defensed, three fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles over four seasons, believes one of the team’s four QBs could possibly be in trouble as the team whittles down its opening-night roster. Though Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette recently reported that Allar and Howard — and Mason Rudolph — will make Pittsburgh’s 53-man roster, Moats is worried it will come at the expense of another deserving (and valuable) player losing a roster spot.
Conversely, Howard completed 17 of 24 passes for 160 yards with two interceptions. Because of his turnover issues, many analysts believe Allar has the inside track on Pittsburgh’s QB2 job. With Aaron Rodgers retiring after the 2026 season, it’s possible Allar could be groomed to take over his job in 2027.
There’s also a possibility the Steelers could grab a passer in Round 1 of the QB-heavy 2027 draft as well.
