Paris-based sales agency Alpha Violet has acquired international sales rights to “Prince,” the darkly funny feature from Uruguayan filmmaker Federico Borgia, ahead of its world premiere at the 70th BFI London Film Festival this October. Set against the decaying seaside luxury of Punta del Este in Uruguay, “Prince” explores class divisions, grief and domestic absurdity. The story follows Jaime, a former lover turned butler to Isabel, a wealthy Argentine woman.
When Isabel dies suddenly, her will reveals an extraordinary condition: her elegant Afghan Hound, Prince, has inherited her luxury estate. Jaime is charged with protecting the dog and the property — which Isabel’s human heirs can only claim once Prince dies. As Isabel’s estranged son and granddaughter move in and attempt to oust the animal, Jaime finds himself navigating old family resentments, a fractured relationship with his own son, and escalating threats to Prince’s life.
The Uruguayan-Argentine film stars Roberto Suárez (“The Saint”), Maitina De Marco (“27 Nights”), and Esteban Bigliardi (“Society of the Snow,” “The Delinquents”). Keiko Funato negotiated the deal on behalf of Alpha Violet, with Magnou Arnábal representing Montelona. What begins with the irresistible premise of a beautiful Afghan Hound inheriting a luxury estate unfolds into a sharp and increasingly absurd tale of greed, loyalty, class and family dysfunction.” Borgia previously co-directed “Clever” (2015), which premiered at Busan and screened at more than 25 festivals worldwide, and the documentary “The Champion of the World” (2019), co-directed with Guillermo Madeiro, winner of the Best Film Award at the BBC LongShots Film Festival.
Alpha Violet’s slate includes “Memorizu” by Miiku Sakanishi, “Sad Girlz” by Fernanda Tovar, and “Flies” by Fernando Eimbcke.
