South Korean sales company Finecut has landed new territorial deals for two K-pop idol-fronted theatrical titles, “After-School Exorcism Club: Girls’ Night” and “Wi-Fi Love in the Palace,” while also adding fresh markets for the previously sold “Wind Up: The Movie.” “After-School Exorcism Club: Girls’ Night” has gone to Indonesia (Catchplay+), Singapore (Shaw Organisation) and Taiwan (Cola Films). The former premiered at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival ahead of its domestic theatrical run and opened in Singapore cinemas in mid-August. That adds to previously announced deals covering the CIS (Best Cinema), Inflight (Bofrato), Japan (KDDI Corporation), Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia (Purple Plan), Taiwan (Caichang International) and Thailand (Sahamongkolfilm International).
K-pop group Fifty Fifty‘s Keena, Chanelle Moon, Yewon, Hana and Athena each play one of the students. Fifty Fifty broke through internationally with its 2023 single “Cupid” before coming back with a different lineup in 2024. The Boyz‘s Younghoon stars alongside Luda (“The Woman Who Swallowed the Sun”) and Kim Dong-jun (“Korea-Khitan War”).
Chang Tae-you (“Bon Appétit, Your Majesty,” “My Love From the Star”) oversees the project as chief creative director, while Sa Seok-choon, who co-directed “Bon Appétit, Your Majesty,” directs. The three titles all stem from Kitz, the global K-pop-focused content platform operated by TakeOne Company, and were developed under the company’s broader push into multi-format IP. Another Finecut title from the Kitz slate, “Reapers on Duty,” follows two grim reapers – a rule-abiding rookie played by Monsta X’s Hyungwon and a rule-breaking veteran played by Lee Min-ki – who get caught up in a storyline centered on extending a person’s life.
The titles will be presented at Broadcast Worldwide (BCWW) and the ongoing Toronto Film Festival market, alongside other Finecut properties: animated feature “Long Long Night,” selected for the Toronto Centrepiece; webtoon adaptation “Guardians of the Video Game,” drawn from source material with 345 million views; noir action film “Tristes Tropiques,” directed by Park Hoon-jung; and “Dora,” directed by July Jung and selected for Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and the Busan International Film Festival’sGala Presentation.
