Former Cowboys Player Bashes 'Historically Bad' Week 5 Loss to Buccaneers

Former Dallas Cowboys defender Chris Canty ripped their Thursday Night Football loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A former Dallas Cowboys defender was embarrassed by their performance in Thursday's 24-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jalon Daniels led the Buccaneers to their first win of the season in a Week 5 upset at AT&T Stadium. A reeling Buccaneers offense gained 419 yards without Baker Mayfield, dropping Dallas to 2-3.

Chris Canty didn't sugarcoat how bad Thursday was for the Cowboys. The former defensive lineman, who spent his first four NFL seasons in Dallas, discussed the upset on ESPN's "Unsportsmanlike." "You had an undrafted rookie quarterback in his second career start, on the road on a short week, and you couldn't find a way to get that done," Canty said Friday morning. "That is a historically bad loss for the Dallas Cowboys." Aside from execution, Canty saw poor effort from a Dallas defense that has allowed the NFL's second-most yards per game (395.4) this season.

"It wasn't just breakdowns in terms of the Xs and Os and support and not setting the edge. It was guys not hustling to the football," Canty claimed. "Coming out of halftime when Bucky Irving rips off a 70-yard run, go back and look at the tape.

Same thing with Rashan Gary. Donovan Ezeiruaku looks like he's doing the tango with Tristan Wirfs going backwards, spinning in all kinds of mess. There are guys that are at the point of attack that are unblocked that don't make the play, that miss tackles." Canty blamed head coach Brian Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Christian Parker.

"Either you're coaching it or you're letting it happen, so I put it on coaching," Canty said. "That's the only thing it comes down to for me. If your coaches are condoning that type of play, that type of effort, then you're lost as a defense.

You're lost as a team." The Super Bowl champion noted that four of Dallas' five opponents have set a season-high in total yards against the Cowboys. Canty doesn't think they should get a pass for playing three games in 11 days, starting with a trip to Brazil. "You are the get-right game for everybody in the National Football League," Canty declared.
