LeBron James officially joining the Philadelphia 76ers this offseason brought a major shift in the top contenders in the Eastern Conference and immediately gave Philly championship aspirations. And the City of Brotherly Love is already excited about having the 41-year-old NBA legend representing their beloved sports team. However, reports have indicated that James might not fully experience it as he should.
There's been ongoing speculation that the iconic basketball star will potentially reside in New York City and commute to Philadelphia via a 45-minute helicopter ride. According to former NBA player Patrick Beverley, who was James's teammate on the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2022-23 season, he'd be making a major mistake during his upcoming seasons with the team. When it comes to Philadelphia, they eat, breathe Sixers and Eagles. ... They even eat and breathe the [expletive] baseball team," Beverley said, per Barstool Sports. "LeBron, this gonna reach you somewhere because I know this gonna hit after I say this.
I ain’t telling you what to do, as a man, I could never tell another man what to do. But to really enjoy Philadelphia, you have to live in Philadelphia," he advised King James. Beverley reflected on his experiences previously living in Philly, calling the love he got there "some of the best love I've ever experienced my entire career in the NBA." "You would appreciate it more living in Philly, and you gotta bring what they want.
Philly is known for having its players' backs," he said, also mentioning the team's fans "know the game of basketball." Beverley spent a brief part of his 2023-24 NBA season with the Philadelphia 76ers. He appeared in 47 games, averaging 6.3 points, 3.1 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game. Beverley also tied his career high of 26 points in a game for the 76ers before the team traded him to the Milwaukee Bucks ahead of the season's trade deadline.
Speculation hit late last month when ESPN's NBA insider Shams Charania reportedly mentioned the possibility of James living in NYC while playing for the 76ers. It would give him a stronger base for his business ventures in New York, including media and other pursuits. It's been noted that James's former Lakers coach, JJ Redick, commuted from his parents' home in Brooklyn to play for the 76ers from 2017 to 2019.
