The Hulu crime drama “Furious” has cleared 43 million hours watched since it premiered, according to Disney. Starring Emmy Rossum as an FBI agent investigating a female serial killer (Lola Petticrew), the Elizabeth Meriwether-created series achieved that in about five weeks, having debuted on July 27. The 43 million hour-total translates to roughly 6.2 million estimated “views,” a statistic calculated by dividing total time watched by runtime.
Because the first three episodes have had since late July to accrue viewership whereas the finale has been available for less than a week, the number of discrete viewers who have tuned into “Furious” at any point is likely much higher than 6.2 million, and the view count will continue to rise as people catch up to the finale. Disney also reports that the finale saw a staggering 90% more views after one day of availability than the premiere did, indicating that “Furious” was a strong word-of-mouth hit that saw significant growth over the course of Season 1, rather than stagnating or dropping off after its debut. The news follows the debut of “Furious” on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings, which operate on a four-week delay.
The series opened as the No. 10 most-watched streaming original of the week of July 27-Aug. 2, at which point only three episodes were available, and will inevitably climb higher as Nielsen’s measurement catches up to the rest of Season 1. The series has achieved critical acclaim in addition to strong viewership, hitting a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. In an interview with Variety, Meriwether said that Season 2 would likely follow Alice (Rossum) and her boss, Nora (Quincy Tyler Bernstine), working on a new case in the C20 unit, which investigates sex crimes.
