The New York Giants are 2-1 but they’ve lost two of their best players — quarterback Jaxson Dart and edge-rusher Brian Burns — to season-ending injuries.New York has turned the offense over to backup QB Jameis Winston and traded for former top-10 pick J.J. McCarthy to compete with him. Whoever is under center will have the benefit of handing off to emerging star running back Cam Skattebo, who’s rushed for 177 yards and a touchdown through three games.
While Skattebo is one of the focal points of the Giants offense, he also gets himself into trouble at times for his over-aggressive style of play. That was evident in Week 3’s win over the Tennessee Titans, and Skattebo’s bank account is a little lighter as a result. The NFL typically fines players $23,882 for illegal use of a helmet, which escalates to $47,762 for second offenses.
Titans linebacker Cedric Gray was on the receiving end of Skattebo’s bruising run. Pinned down on his own 16-yard line, Skattebo took a handoff from Winston and barreled through the line of scrimmage head-first, where he met Gray with a thunderous collision from their helmets knocking together. After the game, Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons questioned whether or not Skattebo’s violent running style would be an issue for the NFL as it continues to crack down on player safety.
I think a couple times he did lower his helmet, which I thought was a point of emphasis in this league, especially with running backs. Because if we lower our helmet (on defense), we’re going to get flagged for it.”
