The New York Giants walked into Monday night riding quite the high. They'd just knocked off their rival Cowboys in the season opener and John Harbaugh's debut as Giants head coach, and looked for a moment like one of the best teams in the NFL. In their primetime showdown against the Rams on "Monday Night Football," franchise quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a severe injury to his knee on the opening drive and left the game.
Reports initially suggested it wasn't expected to be serious, possibly a minor MCL strain that might cost him only a few weeks. More recently, however, it's been speculated that it could be a much more serious injury, possibly an ACL or meniscus tear, which could be season-ending. Everyone is still waiting on a final diagnosis, which should come within the next 24 hours.
The Giants aren't waiting around, though. On Tuesday, NFL insider Mike Garafolo reported that the team is looking to potentially re-sign veteran quarterback Brandon Allen. Allen spent the preseason with the Giants, going 26 of 38 for 224 yards and zero touchdowns with two interceptions across three games.
Prior to that, he served as the backup to Cam Ward in Tennessee. Allen isn't a flashy name, nor is it the one Giants fans were probably hoping to hear.
Across six NFL seasons, he's completed 56.7% of his passes for 1,882 yards and 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions, with stops also in Denver, Cincinnati, and San Francisco. But familiarity is also an asset, and his connection with Callahan still carries value. Chances are, though, if Dart's injury turns out to be season-ending, the Giants will look to add another name to the roster, either through free agency or a potential trade.
