GOP Sinks Millions More Into Key Senate Race for JD Vance's Old Seat

Republicans sink another $14M into Ohio's pivotal Senate race as Jon Husted fights to keep Vance's old seat.

National Republicans are pouring another $14 million into Ohio's closely watched U.S. Senate race, underscoring mounting concerns about Senator Jon Husted's bid to hold on to the seat once occupied by Vice President JD Vance. The Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), the super PAC aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, announced the additional investment Friday, bringing its total commitment to the race to $93 million.

The move comes as Republicans confront an unexpectedly competitive fight against Democrat Sherrod Brown in a state President Donald Trump carried comfortably just two years ago. The Ohio contest is among the most consequential Senate races on the 2026 map. Republicans are defending a narrow majority, and a loss in Ohio could complicate their path to retaining control of the chamber.

With relatively few true battleground Senate races remaining this cycle, both parties have increasingly viewed Ohio as one most likely to determine which party controls the upper chamber. "Senate Leadership Fund is fully invested in maintaining the Republican majority by re-electing Senator Jon Husted and sending 50-year career politician Sherrod Brown packing once and for all," SLF Executive Director Alex Latcham said in a statement. Latcham also argued that Husted had delivered tax cuts and policy victories for Ohio families while criticizing Brown's record in Washington.

Husted, Ohio's former lieutenant governor, was appointed by Republican Governor Mike DeWine early last year to fill the vacancy created when Vance became vice president. The winner of November's election will serve the remaining two years of Vance's term. The race will determine who holds one of the country's most closely watched Senate seats heading into the 2028 election cycle.

The fresh spending, as reported by NBC News, comes despite Ohio's recent shift to the right and highlights unease among some Republicans about Husted's standing in the race. While the Cook Political Report rates the contest Lean Republican, the NBC News Decision Desk considers it a toss-up. Public polling has also shown a tight contest between Husted and Brown, as the Democrat is attempting a political comeback after losing his Senate seat to Republican Bernie Moreno in 2024.

Brown remains one of the most well-known Democrats in Ohio politics and has long outperformed members of his party in statewide races. Democrats hope his longstanding appeal to working-class voters can help reverse their recent struggles in a state that has moved steadily toward Republicans in federal elections. The financial arms race in Ohio has already made it one of the most expensive races in the country.
