Texas Governor Greg Abbott will not attend President Donald Trump's San Antonio rally on Wednesday amid a tightening gubernatorial race, it has been reported. Abbott will not be present at Trump's rally as he has other campaign events planned, The Houston Chronicle's Ben Wermund wrote on X. Wermund added that Abbott said about Trump: "Whenever he does show up, it leads to excitement with the base.
He does a good job with getting the base organized and turning out." Although Texas has not elected a Democratic governor since the 1990s, candidate Gina Hinojosa has mounted a competitive challenge against Abbott. A new New York Times/Siena Poll found Hinojosa in the lead, with 49 percent of respondents backing her, compared to 46 percent backing Abbott. The poll surveyed 615 voters in Texas between September 21 to 30.
Trump is returning to Texas this week for a third time in less than a month to stump for GOP candidates. Republicans are facing growing pressure in a state they have long considered safely red. The president has stepped up campaigning in states where Republicans are facing tougher than expected races, seeking to mobilize his base ahead of the midterms.
