Los Angeles Angels outfielder Jose Siri had a rough night at the plate Wednesday, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, but one pitch stood out from the rest. Siri stepped up to the plate in the 10th inning, when the Angels trailed by three runs with no runners on and two outs. New York Yankees reliever Michael Fulmer threw a sweeper to kick off the at-bat, which ended up well into the left-handed batter's box, but that didn't stop Siri from pulling the trigger.
The outfielder threw the head of his bat towards the ball, missing it by at least a foot. "Siri was committed to swinging at any baseball that was in the stadium," the Yankees broadcast said. Siri went on to foul off the following pitch before fanning on the final offering of the evening, giving the Yankees their win.
The outfielder has a long history of ridiculous swings, having recorded a strikeout rate of 30% or higher in each of his MLB seasons. Formerly of the Houston Astros, New York Mets and Tampa Bay Rays, Siri is having his best season since 2023 in MLB this season. Through 86 games this year, the outfielder has seven homers and 23 RBIs, posting a .672 OPS over the course of the season so far.
He's in the midst of an incredibly rough patch, having struggled all the way through August. He had an OPS below .600 last month, striking out 29 times in 65 at-bats, and is hitless so far in September. His last knock came Aug. 23 against the Texas Rangers.
While Siri isn't a fantastic option, the Angels don't have much else. Siri wasn't in the Angels' original lineup for Wednesday's game, but stepped in to play left field after Wade Meckler had to slide over to right following Josh Lowe's late scratch with neck stiffness. If Lowe misses time on the injured list, the only out-and-out outfielders on the roster will be Meckler, Siri and Mike Trout — though they have a few utility infielders who played in left at some point this season.
If the veteran's struggles persist, the Angels may have no choice but to survey their other options as they try to avoid finishing last in the AL West for the third consecutive season.
