THE BASIC SILHOUETTE of sleeping bags hasn't changed in decades. It's still basically a slim, zippered fabric "tube" that's exactly as wide as it needs to be, leaving you little room to toss and turn. Most of them prioritize packability over comfort with only two options—zipped or unzipped—with no way to adapt to the temperature.
Marmot is looking to change that with the Wraptor 30, a clever new-this-year sleeping bag that replaces old-school zippers with magnetic flap closures that are more versatile than just about everything before it. After months of testing, here's what I found. I’VE BEEN A fussy (or "hybrid," as the experts call it) sleeper my whole life, flopping like a fish from my back to my side to my stomach—rinse and repeat—all night long.
So, traditional mummy-style sleeping bags have always been an annoying but necessary evil facet of my camping gear. I typically "upgrade" to a more plush bedding setup when I rooftop tent or car camp, where Rumpl's Wrap Sack has been my go-to since it debuted last year. But the Wraptor 30 (available in the more affordable synthetic version that I tested or a pricier all-down alternative) hits the sweet spot of comfort, warmth, and portability, making it dang-near-perfect for just about any kind of camping.
It's lighter and more pack-friendly than a traditional car-camping sleeping bag, but cushier and roomier than those portable-yet-claustrophobic mummy bags. The zipperless, magnetic, dual-flap system is dead-simple to use. Just climb inside and layer up however the temperature dictates.
That means you can sleep wide-open in the summer, add just one layer in the spring or fall, and close and secure the second layer when temps dip down closer to freezing. It's not unlike peeling off and putting on more or fewer sheets and blankets at home in bed. That system, combined with the roomier shape of the Wraptor 30, makes for maximum comfort for hybrid sleepers.
I found it moves with my body and position much more easily than traditional mummy alternatives. It's not nearly as constricting around the legs and feet either. SWAPPING ZIPPERS FOR overlapping flaps and snaps maximizes versatility, but it also adds bulk and weight.
