Irish couple found dead in hot tub at Spanish holiday home

An Irish couple were found dead in a hot tub by their teenage children at a holiday rental property in Spain on Tuesday, police said. The bodies of a man, aged 50, and a woman, aged 45, were found at the upscale property in Cullera, on the Valencian coast, on Monday afternoon, according to the Civil Guard. A spokesperson told The Independent that their children, aged 14 and 15, found their parents dead and that a police investigation is now under way.

An official previously told the Irish Independent that a homicide team was investigating the case. Officers took samples of cloudy water from the hot tub for analysis, while the bodies were taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Valencia city for examination, according to The Times. They were removed from the scene just before midnight on Tuesday, The Sun reported.

A source close to the investigation told the Irish Independent: “It’s normal a water sample was taken from the jacuzzi the couple were found in. The analysis could help investigators for example in finding out whether it contains DNA belonging to a third person.” The family are understood to have been staying at the residential development on holiday. Relatives were reportedly making arrangements to travel out to care for the children, who were said to have been receiving psychological support.
