Is OpenAI's ChatGPT Down? Thousands of Users Report Outages

OpenAI, Gemini, Claude and Grok hit by outages Thursday, user reports spike.

OpenAI users reported a wave of problems Thursday morning as the company’s flagship services, including ChatGPT, began failing for thousands of people across the U.S. The surge appeared on Downdetector, where complaints climbed sharply throughout the late morning, indicating widespread trouble across multiple OpenAI tools. The platform, which powers everything from conversational AI to image generation and developer APIs, saw issues affecting the ChatGPT interface, the OpenAI app and portions of the API used by businesses and researchers.

By midmorning ET, the outage map reflected a national pattern of disruptions, and the breakdown of reports showed ChatGPT accounting for the overwhelming majority of problems—roughly 80 percent, according to user submissions. Smaller clusters of complaints pointed to instability in Codex, the app and login functions, suggesting a broader service interruption rather than a single malfunction. The spike in reports follows a period of heavy usage for OpenAI’s suite, which includes DALL‑E, GPT‑4, and newer tools like Sora.

OpenAI’s own status site acknowledged the disruption Thursday, listing “elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex” and noting that engineers had applied a mitigation and were “monitoring the recovery.” The dashboard showed that the incident affecting ChatGPT and Codex for more than a half-hour, even as the company’s broader API and system components continued to display near‑perfect historical uptime. The status page also indicated that OpenAI’s FedRAMP and Ads Platform systems remained fully operational. In addition to OpenAI, Gemini, Claude and Grok are all experiencing outages Thursday, according to user reports collected by Downdetector.
