It’s about to be a lot harder to keep countries honest about climate change A row over when to publish crucial climate change assessments risks letting countries off the hook on emissions cuts Russia is among the countries looking to delay the release of an important climate report A delay in publishing a scientific report does not usually have serious ramifications for the future of life on Earth. But an impasse between governments over when climate scientists should publish their next landmark assessment of climate change threatens to do just that.
A critical meeting of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in Addis Ababa was suspended last week on October 16 without an agreement on when the results of its seventh assessment cycle – called AR7 – should be made public. Don’t be fooled by its less than catchy title. AR7 will consist of a series of high-profile scientific reports that will summarise the latest evidence on the the threat posed by climate change, how countries should adapt and the emissions cuts needed to remain within safe climatic bounds.
Its findings will make headlines around the world and create huge public and media pressure on countries to step up their efforts to fight climate change.
