It: Welcome to Derry shocked and surprised fans to celebrate Halloween this year, as an unannounced 30-minute special episode was added to HBO Max at midnight. This special episode of It: Welcome to Derry is titled A Story of Derry and is set hundreds of years in the past. It follows a group of kids as they explore the Western Woods and encounter an ancient spirit connected to Pennywise and the broader Stephen King pantheon of horror.
The special was directed by Tazbah Chavez and written by Cherie Dimaline and Jasmyne Flournoy. A Story of Derry makes for a satisfying amuse-bouche as we wait for the show's second season. That renewal was only announced a couple of months ago, but the release of this special shows that HBO Max has had plans for more It: Welcome to Derry since the first season was a big hit on the streaming service last year.
The series serves as a prequel to Andy Muschietti's It films. The first season mostly followed the horrific goings-on in Derry, Maine in the 1960s and revealed more about Pennywise. The second season will affirm that the show is an anthology, as it will follow a group of bank robbers who arrive in Derry during the Great Depression and get massacred.
The second season of It: Welcome to Derry does not have a release window at this time. A Story of Derry, the show's first season, and Andy Muschietti's two It movies are all available to stream on HBO Max this Halloween, though.
