Jaguars Reveal Early Plans for Travis Hunter’s Two-Way Role

The Jacksonville Jaguars seem to know how they want to deploy Travis Hunter this season.

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter has said countless times that he would love to play every snap of offense and defense, and while the team has agreed, its actions say otherwise. Multiple reports in Jacksonville this week have revealed that the Jaguars have been playing Hunter almost exclusively on defense. "It is certainly starting to look more and more like Travis Hunter is the [Jaguars'] CB1," John Shipley of Jaguars OnSI wrote.

That certainly aligns with the team's depth chart, too, as Hunter is listed as a starting cornerback and backup wide receiver. However, it's a bit disappointing, given his potential on both sides of the ball. Last season, Hunter made some spectacular grabs while reeling in 28 catches for 298 yards and one touchdown in seven games before having season-ending surgery to repair a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee.

Jaguars head coach Liam Coen indicated their usage of Hunter in practice may not entirely represent how they plan to use him during games, though. Coen shared that when Hunter comes off the practice field on defense, the coaching staff would rather have him continue watching the defense and taking mental reps than going to the other side of the ball to play offense. However one decides to diagnose that statement is up to them, but that surely sounds like a coach who believes Hunter can make much more of an impact on defense than offense.

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Hunter played college football at Jackson State (2022) and Colorado, where he recorded 153 catches for 1,979 yards and 20 touchdowns on offense and 66 tackles, one forced fumble, 16 passes defensed and seven interceptions on defense from 2023-24.
