James Gunn reveals the progress of DC's next Batman, Flash, and more in candid response to fan

If you want to keep abreast of the latest news about the state of DC's cinematic universe, you might be surprised to find that you need to look at the social media site Threads. It's the preferred haunt of DC Studio boss James Gunn, who often shoots off responses to fan questions at random. Most recently, this brought to light some much-needed updates on some of the DC Universe's most anticipated characters.

When a fan asked if Batman's eventual suit would have the same texture as Superman's, Gunn revealed that the suit isn't even designed yet. That puts into perspective just how far off the Caped Crusader's appearance in the DCU is likely to be. While it's possible Bruce Wayne could first appear as a cameo in next year's Man of Tomorrow sans suit, that seems unlikely.

We may have to wait for The Brave and the Bold to get further along in development before we can expect more insight into how Batman will look. Similarly, Gunn tempered expectations about Wally West's DCU debut. When asked if the man better known as the Flash was currently active in the universe, Gunn responded, "Who knows?" What's curious is that Gunn would be the one to know.

This slight diversion is sure to make fans think he's avoiding the question, which he might be. There's no word on any Flash project currently in the works at the moment, but the character is so beloved that it would be wild for him not to show up eventually. Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to 2025's Superman, is set to bring back a lot of familiar faces.

One of the most interesting actors confirmed for the film is Xolo Maridueña, reprising his role as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle from the 2023 film. Maridueña's appearance may suggest that the movie is considered canon to the new DCU, despite being the second-to-last release in the DC Extended Universe. Gunn has now clarified that while Blue Beetle is returning, it does not mean the film itself is canon.

He also noted that 2022's Black Adam is not canon — not that people really thought it was. After Man of Tomorrow, Gunn currently has no projects lined up to direct. That has fans theorizing what his next DC film might be.
