Japan is competing in the wrong artificial intelligence race. Rather than chasing ever-larger data centers and ever-more-powerful chips, it should put AI to work where Japan already has an advantage — the factory floor. In Toyota’s aluminum casting plant in Obu, Aichi Prefecture, an AI model watches 40,000 data points per shot and predicts a defect before the metal cools.
In FANUC’s factory in Oshino, Yamanashi Prefecture, robots build other robots, with AI predicting motor failure from vibration data. At Musashi Seimitsu near Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, a robot arm picks up a gear, spins it against a light and spots a flaw in two seconds. None of these systems run on an NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 rack in Inzai.
None needs 120 kilowatts. They run on one or two GPUs at the edge, on five to 10 kW, inside the factory. This is Japan’s actual AI contest — and it is being mismeasured.
