Japan, U.S. and South Korea back Taiwan at trilateral meeting

The top diplomats of Japan, South Korea and the United States expressed support for Taiwan during a trilateral meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly on Monday, days before a highly anticipated U.S.-China leaders’ summit in Washington. In a joint statement released by Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, U.S.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun following their talks, the three “emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.” The statement did not name China, but said the three diplomats “encouraged the peaceful resolution of cross-Strait issues and opposed any attempts to unilaterally change the status quo” while signaling support for “Taiwan’s meaningful participation in appropriate international organizations.”
