Jason Kidd, who was fired from his head coaching position with the Dallas Mavericks back in May, is reportedly in "advanced talks" regarding a new NBA studio analyst job with ESPN, according to a report from league insider Marc Stein. Kidd, a 10-time NBA All-Star point guard and two-time NBA champion, spent the last five seasons as head coach in Dallas. He coached the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in 2023-24, but Dallas team leadership traded superstar centerpiece Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers the following season.
In the first season of the Cooper Flagg era, Kidd coached the Mavericks to a 26-56 record. New president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri replaced Kidd with first-time NBA coach Dusty May, who just led the Michigan Wolverines to an NCAA Tournament national championship victory. In an interview last month, Kidd said he's open to a return to coaching at some point down the road.
I love to watch players get better. I want to win, I want to help the team win," Kidd said. "I would never say no to coaching, maybe somewhere in the future.
Also, I'm at home just really trying to enjoy my family. Also, just watching the game and seeing if I can help others." The Mavericks will begin their regular season with a matchup against the Houston Rockets on Oct. 21.
