The Los Angeles Chargers and San Francisco 49ers will take the field for a preseason matchup on Thursday night. On Wednesday, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that a "number of starters" — including quarterback Brock Purdy — are likely to play in this preseason clash. Jim Harbaugh, a former 49ers coach entering his second season as head coach of the Chargers, has been admiring Purdy from afar.
"I want to shake his hand. Hopefully Kyle will introduce me to him," Harbaugh said, via 49ers reporter David Lombardi. "[I appreciate] how good he is.
His timing, his decision-making, his accuracy. I just like how cool he is, how cool he plays." Purdy missed several games due to injury in 2025. Through his nine game appearances, he completed 69.4% of his pass attempts for 2,167 yards, 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Thursday's 49ers-Chargers contest will kickoff at 10 p.m. The 49ers will begin their 2026 regular-season schedule with a Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 10. The Chargers will begin their year with a Week 1 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 13.
