Contract negotiations between Karl-Anthony Towns and the New York Knicks have reached a standstill, according to a report from NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN. An agreement between the two sides is reportedly unlikely before the start of the 2026-27 season as the team begins training camp next week. Towns is eligible to receive a contract extension up to four years worth $273 million, according to ESPN's Bobby Marks.
The star big man and the Knicks reportedly engaged in extensive conversations regarding an extension in the months following the team's NBA Finals victory earlier this year. "Talks have been described to me as cordial, there just has not been movement on a deal — especially as of late," Charania reported on Wednesday. Towns just finished up his second season with New York.
Over the course of his two-year career with the Knicks, he's averaged 22.2 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. He played a major role in the franchise's run to its first NBA title in 53 years, averaging 15.9 points and 10.6 rebounds per game in the playoffs. Towns is set to earn $57 million this coming NBA season and has a $61 million player option in 2027-28.
