In the final season of his five-year contract with Amazon Prime Video, “Thursday Night Football” analyst Kirk Herbstreit had some decisions to make. Herbstreit, who’s most widely known for hosting ESPN’s “College GameDay” and as the color commentator for ESPN’s top college football game on Saturdays, was reportedly weighing whether or not to continue with NFL broadcasting. He’s served as the color commentator for “TNF” on Prime Video for the last four years alongside Al Michaels.

But the streaming giant reportedly was considering replacing Herbstreit for a bigger name in the NFL world, which explains the unique details of his new contract with Prime Video. Watt to replace Tony Romo — Amazon has allegedly been on the search for its big fish. According to Marchand, Amazon initially eyed McVay years ago after the Rams won the Super Bowl.

It was even willing to offer him a contract worth $20 million per year to be its top analyst, but McVay chose to sign a new deal to stay with the Rams. Marchand also stated that Herbstreit’s contract with ESPN is up after this year, but the network doesn’t plan to address his contract status until after the college football season is over. It’s hard to imagine given the integral role he plays in ESPN’s college football coverage that Herbstreit would be going anywhere.
