Korea Box Office: ‘The Odyssey’ Overwhelms ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ as Admissions Top 10 Million

According to data from KOBIS, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, the Christopher Nolan-directed tentpole generated $5.9 million from 698,384 admissions over the three-day frame across 1,858 screens, capturing 60.92% of the total weekend market. With its fifth consecutive weekend victory, the blockbuster officially crossed the milestone of ten million admissions, pushing its cumulative haul to $83.2 million from 10,027,970 total viewers since its Aug. 5 debut. Superhero blockbuster “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” retained second place in its sixth outing, generating $942,178 from 146,674 admissions across 725 screens.

It accounted for 9.6% of the weekend market, lifting its cumulative South Korean gross to $67.9 million from 8,792,026 total ticket buyers. Curry Barker’s “Obsession” debuted in third place, pulling in $1.1 million from 138,447 admissions over the three-day frame across 717 screens. Including mid-week business since its Sep. 2 opening, the sleeper horror entry has accumulated $1.4 million from 185,100 total viewers.

Local family road-trip drama “The Journey to Gyeongju” took fourth place in its sophomore weekend, generating $359,527 from 49,417 admissions. Directed by Kim Mi-jo and starring Lee Jung-eun, Gong Hyo-jin, Park So-dam, Lee Yeon, and Byun Yo-han, the revenge-tinged family narrative moved its cumulative total to $2.1 million from 297,594 admissions. The local family crime-drama “Portrait of a Family” opened in fifth place, earning $286,526 from 40,835 admissions over the weekend.

Directed by Lee Ji-won and starring Ryu Seung-ryong and Ha Ji-won, the film centers on a former superstar baseball player and a top actress whose glamorous lives unravel when a mysterious young girl appears, dragging them into a desperate struggle seven years later. Since its Sep. 2 launch, the film has collected $484,757 from 71,392 admissions. Since its Sep. 2 premiere, the feature has grossed $399,799 from 55,931 admissions.

Animated fantasy sequel “Teenieping: Legend of the Whale Heartstone” was in seventh place, adding $120,759 from 16,715 admissions. Directed by Kim Soo-hoon, the family film has pushed its cumulative gross to $6 million from 858,707 admissions since its Aug. 5 rollout. The upcoming local comedy-drama “The Intern” landed in eighth place ahead of its official wide release, bringing in $91,227 from 11,989 admissions across early preview screenings.

Directed by Kim Do-young, the local remake of Nancy Meyers’ 2015 Hollywood film follows a seasoned senior citizen who enters the workforce anew as a senior intern at an energetic fashion startup. Toho’s anime mystery “Detective Conan the Movie: Fallen Angel of the Highway” placed ninth, collecting $60,695 from 7,953 admissions over the frame. Directed by Takahiro Hasui, the franchise instalment has reached a cumulative total of $3.1 million from 420,629 viewers.
