Lesley Manville battles snow and spies in the trailer for upcoming Cold War thriller “Winter of the Crow,” from director Kasia Adamik and set against the turmoil of 1981 Warsaw. Alongside releasing the official trailer, Cohen Media Group has also announced that the film will release theatrically nationwide on Oct 9. Inspired by Nobel Prize-winning author Olga Tokarczuk’s highly acclaimed “Professor Andrews Goes to Warsaw,” “Winter of the Crows” stars Manville as Joan Andrews, a British psychiatry professor who travels to Warsaw in December 1981 as a guest lecturer at a local university.

When Martial Law is suddenly imposed and the country shuts down overnight, Joan finds herself trapped in an increasingly dangerous and unfamiliar world. Armed with her Polaroid camera, Joan witnesses a brutal murder by the secret police. With Poland effectively sealed off and her own life now in danger, she is forced into hiding and becomes a hunted fugitive, navigating a city transformed by fear, political repression and violence.

Alongside Manville, an Oscar nominee who recently won a Tony award for her role the revival of Greek tragedy, “Oedipus,” the cast includes Tom Burke (“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” “The Souvenir”), Andrzej Konopka (“The Lure,” “Nina”),Sascha Ley (“We’ll Find Happiness”) and Zofia Wichłacz (“World on Fire”). In its review of the film, Variety praised the performance of Manville, saying she “carries the film with an air of increasingly raw determination.” “Anchored by a remarkable performance from Lesley Manville, Kasia Adamik has created a film that is both a gripping thriller and a deeply human story,” said Robert Aaronson, executive vice president of Cohen Media Group. We’re very proud to bring it to theaters this October.” Added Adamik: “’Winter of the Crow’ is deeply personal to me, and I wanted to capture the fear and uncertainty of a moment when everyday life could change in an instant.

Lesley Manville brings such intelligence, strength and humanity to Joan, and I’m thrilled that audiences will have the opportunity to experience her extraordinary performance—and this story—on the big screen.” The film was produced by Olga Chajdas, Stanisław Dziedzic, Katarzyna Ozga, Nicolas Steil and Samantha Taylor, and adapted from the short story by Tokarczuk. The film was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute, Film Fund Luxembourg, UK Global Screen Fund and Silesia Film. Agnieszka Holland serves as executive producer.
