The Detroit Lions needed every bit of Sunday afternoon at Ford Field to hold off the New York Jets, escaping with a 31-24 win over a team that's already proving tough to put away. Jared Goff was efficient, going 25-of-32 for 269 yards and two touchdowns with zero interceptions, as the Lions held on late. But Jahmyr Gibbs was again the star of the show, rushing for 99 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, and adding another 65 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown.
With those three total touchdowns, Gibbs now has 55 in his NFL career. That makes him one of just four players in league history to reach at least 55 touchdowns before turning 25, joining Barry Sanders (57), Maurice Jones-Drew (56), and Todd Gurley (56). Three games in, he's making that case look easy. He's already up to 307 rushing yards, 156 receiving yards, and six total touchdowns, a pace that would put him over 1,700 rushing yards, north of 800 receiving yards, and more than 30 total touchdowns by the end of the season. Chris Johnson holds the all-time record with 2,509 total scrimmage yards during his 2009 season with the Titans.
Gibbs is already on pace to potentially break that record. What he's accomplished just four years into his NFL career is remarkable, and now that he has the backfield to himself, he's on his way to putting up career-best, and potentially historic, numbers.
