Long-Time NFL Cornerback Announces Sudden Retirement

A long-time NFL cornerback has surprisingly decided to call it a career.

The NFL is bidding farewell to a defender who has spent nearly a decade in the league. According to NFL insider Cameron Wolfe, long-time NFL slot cornerback Arthur Maulet is retiring after nine seasons, during which he spent time with seven different teams. Maulet, 33, last played for the Detroit Lions in 2025.

He joined Detroit's practice squad on Oct. 8, 2025 and was promoted to the active roster on Oct. 20. In a Week 7 24-9 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Maulet recorded his fifth and now final career interception. Maulet began his professional career as an undrafted free agent in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Memphis.

He caught on with the New Orleans Saints shortly after, earning a spot on their practice squad for his rookie year. The Saints then waived Maulet on Sep. 21, 2018, and he was claimed off waivers by the Indianapolis Colts. However, he only lasted about two months in Indianapolis, and he was signed back to the Saints practice squad.

On Jan. 29, 2019, Maulet signed a reserve/future contract with the New York Jets, who he spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons with, recording 67 tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery, seven passes defensed and two interceptions. Following his two-year stint in New York, Maulet joined the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year contract and then earned a two-year contract extension after a productive 2021 campaign. The next season, Maulet registered a career-high 59 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble and one interception, but Pittsburgh surprisingly released him ahead of the 2023 season.

That's when he decided to join the Steelers AFC North rival, the Baltimore Ravens, on a one-year deal. He played in 14 games with three starts as a slot corner, recording 37 tackles, two fumble recoveries, five passes defensed and one interception. Maulet earned yet another two-year contract extension, but he landed on injured reserve the following season due to a knee injury and was released the following year.

He was never the same player, though, spending short stints with the Houston Texans and Lions in 2025 before calling it a career. Maulet finished his NFL career with 239 tackles, five sacks, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, 18 passes defensed and five interceptions.
